Squiggle Plate (8/23/10)
This plate was an experimental study in color as well as the combination of different types of glass in an unusually hand-cut mold. It was also mentally challenging as well! :-D LOL A large amount of frit (little pieces of glass) was used around the edges with a slumped yellow square in the center. Although the edge appears to be black, red, & white... the original intended color was a deep purple with red & white... hence the use of yellow in the center (purple & yellow). Initially, the piece was fired first, then slumped.
The size of this plate is approximately 10" x 10".
If you look closely it appears as if there's a large bubble in the slumped portion... and that was most likely because air could not escape while being heated in the kiln... so a bubble formed. These kinds of things happen especially in the experimental stages of learning the glass & how it reacts to heat, and the annealing process. Sometimes a bubble could be an asset to a piece, and then other times it could be disastrous. Here, it's not so bad. '-)
This is one of those creations that would more than likely remain in my collection and be used as perhaps an incense holder, or as a very large ashtray for someone else! :-D LOL
Unfortunately, this plate is no longer in my collection... time to make a *new* one in some interesting colors! '-D
